NFPA 58 2014 Edition – Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code

The new 2014 Edition of NFPA 58, “Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code,” will be released soon.  You can pre-order your copy from Document Center Inc. now.  The Code is widely used, as it covers the minimum safety requirements for all liquefied petroleum gas (propane) installations.  You’ll be using this standard to prevent leaks and explosions in applications covering small cylinders installed in homes to large bulk storage facilities handling 100,000 gallons or more.

The new revision replaces the previous NFPA 58 2011 Edition, which is now obsolete.  The new 135 page update has changes to the following areas:

  • Bulk plant and industrial plant definitions have been updated.  They now clearly identify storage threshold at greater than 4,000 gallons water capacity.
  • Container appurtenance requirements are revised.  They are now harmonized at 4,000 and less/greater than 4,000 gallons water capacity to better reflect real container usage.
  • A definition has been added along with annex information to describe vehicular barrier protection for added safety in case of collision.
  • Training requirements now define which personnel must be trained and in what topics.
  • There are new requirements for tank heaters and updated ones for vaporizers.
  • Corrosion protection for some underground piping systems is now addressed.

There are already 2 Interim Tentative Amendments available for the 2014 Edition of NFPA 58.  These two TIA’s, as they are called, cover corrections to the new edition.  TIA 1 makes corrections to sections 11.1.1, A.11.1.1, and 11.15.2 and TIA 2 corrects section 6.12.9.  They are valid until a new edition is released.  Both TIA’s are effective as of August 20, 2013.

If you’re involved with container construction, piping design, or the handling of liquefied petroleum gas during transfer between containers, the NFPA 58 will help you improve your safety procedures.  Speaking of safety, it also defines the correct placement of containers to separate them from homes, stores, schools and other important buildings.
